I stumbled upon my Secondary Highway in May '06. While riding my motorcycle on the Minawanka loop near Banff National Park, I became caught in a fierce thunderstorm. I pulled over under a large pine tree for shelter. Under the tree stood a large granite monument to a few residence of the now ghost town of Bank Head who served in the Great War. While waiting out the storm I looked behind the monument and noticed a large gray abandoned building through the dense forest. Intrigued, I carefully ran toward it. Inside I found names scratched into the walls that dated back as far as the 1940's. Thankfully I had my small point and shoot digital camera with me. I wandered around for 30 minutes until the storm stopped, returned to my bike and headed home. I randomly posted some of the photos on the Internet and surprisingly received some responses. After researching some nearby ghost towns around southern Alberta, I jumped on my bike and headed out exploring the following weekend. I never thought that almost 3 years later I would be doing this. I have been thankful to have teachers in my life. I believe that a good teacher plants seeds and through cultivating personal experiences, those seeds will grow into maturity. I guess you can say that “A Secondary Highway” is a profound metaphor that I share and attempt to demonstrate through my photography. I hope that everyone is as lucky as I am to stumble upon their secondary highway. Robert Scott resides in Calgary Alberta Canada.
